Destroid is riddled with spam ratings. Just keep a close eye on it. When one gets deleted, two more come in its place.

There are at least 10 more spam rate to add to my previous list from the last 2 days... I can continue to add but I see that are all still there... Mr "DollyPop" is throwing 10 and bad rates all over the place!

Question to the mods: Out of curiosity, what constitutes a spam rating? I realize there are some people that leave horribly irrelevant rates, but you guys deleted quite a few from Destroid that were legitimate rates.

Spinba, it's obviously a bit subjective what constitutes an overrate, but from what I understand-- and I'm not a mod-- a true "overrate" (as in one that should be deleted) is a rating that gives a track very high marks without thoroughly explaining/justifying the reason for the numbers.
  2.
Who told you it was removed for being an over rate? I delete hundreds of rates every week, for many different reasons, here are some common ones:

    - Thoughtless numbers (giving 10's for a lesser-quality ride, or 2's for an amazing ride)
    - The user is on a spam trend, going from ride to ride giving the same numbers with a slightly edited description each time.
    - The description is copied from another rate (sometimes slightly edited)
    - The description is an extract from some online document/story, usually in another language.
    - The description is full of rubbish just to satisfy the minimum character rule
    - The rating has significant down votes (may still be approved, and some overrates that are highly upvoted still get deleted)
    - The description is unrelated to the ride
    - Etc.

If your rate was deleted, it probably fell into one of these examples. It is worth noting that we can view the ratings differently as Mods, we can see when people go from ride to ride, posting rate after rate, just to get their allowance up. We can see when people just throw the numbers up, or put down some generic description. People try to outsmart the system, but it is so easy to see. One user had 3 prefab rates written down, and alternated them, hoping we wouldn't see. We can also see when someone has pasted content.

When I look through the rates, I do it in quick fire recension. I tripple tap, looking at upvotes/downvotes, numbers, description, then on to the next rate. If the downvote is 0 or less then I know that users other than the ride owner have looked at the rate and dissaproved. I look at the number rate for any obvious 10's, or all 3 numbers the same, showing potential thoughtlessness. I then look at the description for obviously copied content or efforts to fill the characted amount. If anything like this makes the rate slightly stick out from the list, I'll then investigate further, looking at which ride it is for, looking at the rates owner if he is a repeat offender I'll look for him to slip up another couple times and then ban, I'll potentially have to translate the rate, etc etc.

NB: I might change or add some more examples.

why are these troll rates so bad on this site only? maybe it would be a good idea to try and fix it. that is one of the reasons I don't upload most of my stuff here. and when it does happen it takes sometimes weeks for it to get fixed. I have one on another track that never got deleted even though its clearly copied from the one above it. The report buttons don't seem to work and neither do the smile and frown faces.

I can promise you that we understand lol. We're starting to look at other options but it's hard for the four somewhat-amateurs of us to make big changes to the site. But that's not to say it hasn't been a dinner table topic in the past few months...

Request: If you report a rate where it isn't immediately apparent WHY you're reporting it, come and post the permalink here with an explanation. I'm staring at the moderating queue right now going "Ok, so, a lot of these are high rates that are barely over 300 characters... but there's nothing obviously wrong with them, and most of them are on a good track (Hunter, specifically)". I have no idea why I'm supposed to delete these.

High rating + simple rate =/= something worth reporting.

Okay, this isn't a complaint about a specific rating, but I just want to point out that when you upload a coaster and someone takes the time to leave a detailed rating, it's really obnoxious to then delete the track and upload a "new version" in which you haven't actually changed a singled damned thing.

This has been happening more and more lately, or so it would seem, and at this point I simply don't download tracks from repeat offenders. It's one thing to take criticism, fix the track, and upload a V2. It's quite another to delete your track and upload the same exact one for a clean slate, and incredibly disrespectful to those who have opted to give you feedback. It's not about the ratio, which ultimately doesn't change as a result of this snakey practice anyway. It's about wasting other people's time.

^^Preach, that offence is getting much more common and personally I think they should get some kind of punishment. Perhaps a trust system/rating would help deter people from it.

It would be nice if there were some kind of consequence but I also realize that realistically it might be hard to have a certain set of standards for what constitutes an "updated version" that is adequately broad to cover most circumstances. It would be even nicer if people could just suck it up and accept that no track is going to get straight tens from anyone, or indeed likely anyone.

Even a restriction on how soon you can post a "revision" of the same track would be an improvement; e.g. you may not post a new version of the same track for 72 hours (for example). Not sure how easy this would be to enforce, though, and it's entirely possible that it would only do so much to curb this problem anyway.

I wonder if there's any way to implement a revision system akin to coastercrazy, in which you can post a revision of a track to its existing page. I think that's a rather elegant solution to this kind of problem but I have no idea how easy or absolutely impossible it would be to add a similar feature given how this site is set-up.

Hey, I've found a review on the Smiler that seemed unfair and didn't make much sense:

I almost feel like there needs to be a separate exchange without the rating/ratio system in place. A place for in-progress works, partly or fully abandoned rides, or ride releases where the creator doesn't necessarily want rates. Perhaps with the ability to define rides as "Abandoned, can take and use for other projects with (or without) permission" as there seems to be some of that floating around here. I know I would much more be likely to release smaller, flawed rides without putting the onus on others to rate them if they want to download them.

I enjoy that some people put up Dropbox links of WIPs instead of putting them on the Exchange. Leaving rates on WIPs seem silly and pointless, but by downloading one from the Exchange, your ratio takes a hit unless you drop a comment.

I don't know if that would quell the problem of bum rates, but I feel it would remove some of the current problems with the system. Also, maybe not allowing one to delete a coaster from the exchange for x-time after a comment. Maybe a week or so.

I've always found the ratings/ratio system flawed and I'm wondering if there's better solutions out there.
  9.
I just want to put this out here, someone left a review on my coaster that was talking about the Smiler, so obviously he had copied a review from the Smiler coaster:
    https://nolimits-exchange.com/user/toilette35/27071

The Smiler has also recieved a review with a 0.50/10 rating, which seemed really unfair:

For a while now we have been thinking the same thing, actually. I already have an idea drafted as well but it's a matter of implementation. Sooner or later it would be nice if we addressed this head-on and asked for some help along the way.

Sorry if that may not be a good answer. But know that we understand first-hand (we're the one deleting all of these ratings, after all!) and that we're going to at least try and figure out a solution. Even if it involves some big changes.

I like that you guys are considering a rehaul of the system. It seems like with Steam Workshop integration on the horizon, the days of requiring rates for downloads in the traditional way are coming to an end. I really like when people are kind and drop rates and criticism (because I know I need it) but there's been more and more spam rates to just get the download. I feel like there needs to be more incentive to rate.

Should we create a community thread for ideas/suggestions for a solution for the future?

Can you possibly earn a bit of real money or culminate points towards a prepaid giftcard for each rate? Then when you earn enough points you can cash them in for a 25 dollar giftcard that you can have mailed to your house. Like frequent flyer airline miles points. That would be a good incentive to rate.

^ I don't think they would or should do financial incentives, first of all this website doesn't earn much revenue if any, there are no adverts or paid subscriptions so the owners would have to pay it all out of their own money and imo it would just attract alot more spam from people who just want the money.

I think a trust system would be a good, so you get points for ratings based on the number of thumbs up/down an report ratings which could also be merged with a short/long rating system and the number of coasters uploaded/deleted.

If they spam rate they will not get the points towards a 25 dollar visa card. They would get points taken away from their amount that they would earn towards the giftcard.
