Posted By: baderHey what happened to normal pictures? This isn't fun anymore.

Well, in a sense I agree and disagree. With the exception of woodies, or some random jet coaster/kiddie coaster, most normal ride pictures are going to be incredibly easy to guess. Considering the resources available such as rcdb and other sites, it almost just becomes "who sees it and searches for it first" instead of truly guess the coaster. That's why I always edit my pictures to some extent (atleast editing the colors or something), because it adds an extra level of challenge to the game. What makes this game fun to me is using skills other than just searching the internet, which is why BBspeed's post was really well done. Because you had to logically deduce that the track connectors were mack, and then propose the hypothesis that it was an edited version of blue fire based upon the knowledge that mack only has one coaster with inversions.

For example if I were to post a pic of a red b&m with gray supports, there's really only three options, Intimidator, Daemonen, or Dragon Khan, so by editing it somewhat, for example turning the pic black and white, the game becomes extended to most b&m coasters. Also if you look at the first and second pages, most all of the images without editing that were not overly cropped(which I consider to be editing anyways) were guessed on mostly the first attempt. IMO editing allows the game to be more difficult, but also more enjoyable.

To follow up on Yoshiking's post and also my own post, I have no problem with editing, but I would urge you to use a very, very light hand when editing.

In my opinion, you should always leave one distinguishing characteristic visible (if not necessarily obvious) to help 'guessers' out. It's no fun if you obscure an image to the point where you can identify that it's (for example) an Arrow coaster, but then leave the players to spin their wheels and end up alphabetically shouting out everything Arrow's ever done until finally they chance upon the right answer. Hints can help, but if you need to post a hint, strongly consider modifying/changing your image so you don't feel like you'll have to. Alternately, a good hint would be something like "pay special attention to the cross bracing" or similar, where careful studying of the image and matching it with coaster knowledge could produce the answer, whereas something like "it's in Ohio" is really only narrowing the blind-guess field.

Put another way, if you have an absolutely encyclopedic knowledge of every small distinguishing characteristic of every coaster in the world from every manufactuerer (ever), you should never truly have to guess at guess the coaster. Seems counterintuitive, but in my experience that's how the game keeps from getting stale.

As far as image creation goes, I like cropping and color-adjusting (or removing) because it lets the image creator guide (or distract) the guesser's focus towards (or away from) the clue that gives away the coaster. Similarly, using self-taken pics (or at least ones not on RCDB) can make things more challenging because your pic could be unique compared to what is easily discovered on the internet. I tend not to like obfuscating it until we only know we're looking at a coaster because the image creator told us so.

I would suggest that we try to keep all of that in mind as the thread progresses, particularly when it falls on you to pick a coaster. I suppose we could always spell out hard and fast rules, but I feel like we're intelligent enough that I shouldn't need to. Game on!

DC got it. Good sleuthing to Yoshiking too. If you identified the connector in the picture, it immediately narrowed the possible choices to 2 (to my knowledge, the two Intamin jetski style coasters are the only coasters in the world to use those plastic(?) support/track connections). DC, you're up if you want it.

Also, I didn't mean to turn this from Guess The Coaster to How Well Do You Know Your Support/Track Connections, despite that that was the key to both images I've posted. I'll branch out a bit in the future.

That's alright BB, I was just trying to see if I hadn't lost all my coaster knowledge yet. :)

I'm surprised it hasn't gone off-track to people posting pictures of entrance signs and such, lol-worthy as that was in the past. :D

Hey, I mean, if you find a solvable picture of a seatbelt, as far as I'm concerned that's both creative and totally fair game.

I think it's a Maurer... but I've just browsed RCDB and came back with nothing. It looks like their compact spinning coaster layout but it has those distinctive trestle supports for the hairpins that I just can't find a match for. Are there cheapo Chinese Maurer ripoffs? Hmmm....

[edit: Magical Wheels @ Guilin Merryland Theme Park! It WAS a cheapo Chinese Maurer ripoff! That was a good one, nice work]

[edit again: Just missed it, nice work TE]

Am I the only one who thinks we shouldn't have to use RCDB to find a coaster (plus an unknown coaster by all of us) ?

Okay, now give us a legitimate hint that will key us into finding the correct ride.

Easier hint- It has 0 inversions and was built by R&R.
